Hiking the South West Coast Path: Instow to Westward Ho! (day 6)

Recommended route: Instow to Westward Ho! – 11 miles
My route: Instow to Abbotsham – 11 miles (I walked a bit past Westward Ho! but I also skipped Bideford because I got the ferry)

I spent a few days at home letting my gross, infected blisters heal but I was impatient to get back on the trail; not so much because I was enjoying it, but because I wanted it finished and out of my life forever. I should have stayed off my feet for longer than 2 days because they were still wrecked as I left Instow.

Luckily it was an easy and scenic trail from my campsite in Yelland, along the River Tor to Instow, where I waited for high tide before taking the little ferry across the River Torridge for £2. It was such a nice start to the day and meant I got to skip the long and boring walk around Bideford.

The village of Appledor was a-dor-able (sorry) and I even enjoyed the walk around Northam Burrows Country Park, a section that I could have skipped but I felt up for the extra miles and it was lovely.

Westward Ho! has a massive beach full of emmets, and the town was heaving with families and seagulls waiting for their unsuspecting victims, so I grabbed lunch for then and dinner for later before pushing onto my campsite near Abbotsham along a lovely stretch of coast.

Even though my feet hadn’t healed much, it was still a good day, and so easy in comparison to the last week! Plus, I was one day closer to Cornwall and all I wanted was to walk across the border before I gave up completely.
